Resetting our digital habits for a more mindful 2025

As the new year kicks off, many of us focus on resolutions related to physical health—exercising more, eating better, or improving sleep. But what about our mental space? In a world where our digital habits shape our mood, focus, and even identity, it’s just as important to take a step back and reassess our relationship with technology.

At Digital Discipline, our work in schools and communities has revealed just how deeply social media and phone dependency affect young people. During our school visits, we’ve witnessed students experiencing anxiety when separated from their devices—not just out of curiosity but out of a genuine fear of missing out. The constant need to check notifications, scroll endlessly, and stay connected online has replaced real-life engagement, making it harder for students to be fully present in their learning, relationships, and self-reflection.

The cost of digital dependency

Our recent SurveyMonkey results show that:

  • More than 60% of respondents struggle with spending too much time on social media.

  • Mor than 50% report that social media negatively impacts their productivity and focus.

  • 49% feel anxiety or stress due to the content they consume online.

This isn't just about staying updated—it's about recognizing how our digital habits shape our daily lives, our emotions, and even our self-worth. The challenge is real, but so are the solutions.

The Need for Digital Detox

One way to reset our relationship with technology is through structured digital detoxes. Our 828 Sundays initiative—which involved individuals, couples, and families—challenged participants to disconnect from social media for set periods of time. Even short breaks from constant connectivity helped people recognize their reliance on devices and rethink how they use their time.

The takeaway? We don’t need to be online all the time. It’s possible to reclaim focus, build stronger relationships, and feel more present just by creating intentional breaks from technology.

Where Do We Go From Here?

It’s time to take control of our digital habits rather than letting them control us. Ask yourself:

📌 Am I using my phone, or is it using me?

📌 How much of my screen time is actually productive?

📌 What could I gain by stepping away for a while?

The reality is that too much screen time is affecting our mental wellbeing, and it’s up to us to do something about it. In our upcoming course, we’ll dive deeper into practical strategies to break free from digital dependence and reclaim our time.

For now, challenge yourself to take a break. Try going a few hours without social media this weekend. See how it feels. The first step to change is awareness.

Let’s make 2025 the year we take back control!
